Managing SMT capacity is essential for an EMS/OEM business because it affects cost competitiveness and the ability to meet customer deliveries. While larger organizations often have software to manage capacity, mid and small-sized companies struggle to monitor it in real time and plan for future demand. This lack of capacity management can lead to missed deliveries or unnecessary stress in the delivery process.
Knowing your capacity against customer demand in advance is beneficial. However, not having this knowledge can create confusion and chaos.
I have developed a simple Excel tool where organizations can enter the cycle time for each product on the SMT line and the demand for these models. The tool calculates the available versus required capacity and suggests actions like adding extra shifts, working weekends, or planning for a new production line. Some demand spikes can also be managed by leveling the demand itself.
